Chapter Seven

Courtney held up the red dress under her chin for a moment as she checked herself out in the mirror. “Red or green?” She swapped the red for green and shook her head. “Red.”

She placed the dress on the edge of the bed and put the green one back for another day. Although both were plenty festive, the red was a little sexier and had that nice slit on the thigh. Choice made. She had every intention of looking good for Mira at the party later.

Their impromptu dinner date-slash-meeting had been on her mind constantly since that night. Courtney liked the immediate chemistry she’d felt with Mira, and flirting with her came as easy as breathing. So when Mira dialed it up and kissed her cheek, Courtney knew that they were on the same page. She only wished she’d had a chance to kiss her the way she wanted to.

But this was fine, she thought. Because the anticipation of what could be was making her thrum in all the right places. Now tonight wasn’t just about having a successful party, but also about seeing Mira again. And that was something she was very much looking forward to.

A buzzing sound nearby reminded her that she’d silenced her phone while at the gym earlier. She reached for it and swiped her thumb across the screen to answer.

“Hi, Mom.” She put her on speaker so she could finish getting ready.

“Hi, dear,” her mom replied. “Are you ready for the big party?”

“Getting there,” Courtney said as she started to braid her hair to prep it for the updo she had planned for tonight. “How’s Grandpa?”

“He’s good. Just anxious about getting to the cabin. You know how he gets.”

Courtney nodded—she knew her grandfather disliked flying these days. She wasn’t a huge fan of it either, but it was the only way for her to see her extended family, so it was a necessary evil. “He’ll be glad once he’s all settled in.”

“You’re right, he will.” Her mother was humming something. She must be baking. She always hummed when she baked.

“What are you making?” Courtney almost didn’t want to ask because she knew whatever it was would be amazing and not for her. She missed her mom’s baked goods.

“Snickerdoodle cookies to bribe Grandpa to behave on the flight and to hold everyone over once they arrive until we can get the grocery delivery sorted out.” Her mother sighed. “I wish you were going to be here this weekend, too. I miss you.”

“Me, too.” Courtney frowned. Her family was arriving this weekend and spending the entire week of Christmas together, but she had too many end-of-year things to finish at work. So her flight wasn’t leaving until Christmas Eve, and it had cost her far too much for how incredibly inconvenient the whole thing was.

“When are you getting in again?”

“Nine.” Courtney had gotten one of the last seats on the last flight out of Boston for the night. She was landing way later than she would have liked, and she was more than a little sore about it.
